In a Jerry Springer-esque final thought, Crouch thus asks of his readers a simple request: to choose a former footballer and give them a day: ‘mark it in your diary and celebrate them as they once were, and as they are now,’ he urges, ‘don’t’ let them be forgotten. However as Crouch points out it isn’t totally ‘the fault of the player, it’s the people around him taking advantage. There she is given the chance to undo her regrets and try out each of the other lives she might have lived. And according to the residents of the Japanese island of Okinawa - the world's longest-living people - finding it is the key to a longer and more fulfilled life.

Personally I prefer The Secret Footballers collection but Crouch being able to put names to stories and his own laidback style is a great touch. Shame he didn’t narrate the audiobook, and the narrator didn’t differentiate very clearly between Crouch talking and his interviewees talking which made it hard to follow at times. The taverna is the only place that Kostas and Defne can meet in secret, hidden beneath the blackened beams from which hang garlands of garlic and chilli peppers, creeping honeysuckle, and in the centre, growing through a cavity in the roof, a fig tree. Some of the stories don't have happy endings and Crouch suggests that better education and awareness for young pros are a must.

The 9 Step Negativity Detox is a powerful series that will teach you the nine simple steps to free you from the unnecessary causes of negativity in your life. The fig tree is there, too, when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, when the teenagers vanish. He then shines a light on their diverse and interesting secondary career choices, from those that we know and recognise from our own consumption of football coverage, to those with more surprising endeavours which we are less familiar; interviewing many to get their take on their motivations. Some are obvious; coaching, managing, punditry but some are more diverse such as Timo Apsrilla developing his own brand of condoms or Gavin Peacock turning his back on the game to become a church minister in Canada. Across 16 Chapters and 275 Pages, Peter Crouch builds the reader a picture of the character that he has come to know through tales from throughout his career, or his perception and experience from afar for others, during their “main and more famous career” of being a footballer.

However How to be an Ex Footballer as well as having its expected fill of funny anecdotes also has a darker side. Although it does pick up with the final chapter with more sobering accounts, this time concerning mental health and in particular the experiences of Aston Villa’s Lee Hendry. A much-used word, karma is loosely understood as a system of checks and balances in our lives, of good actions and bad deeds, of good thoughts and bad intentions. Otherwise, it’s a really interesting look into a number of other peoples post-football careers and pretty touching at times too.

There's a reason We Are Legion was named Audible's Best Science Fiction Book of 2016: Its irresistibly irreverent wit! I felt this bisected his previous books in that it wasn’t quite as good as his first, but on a par or slightly better than his second.
