No one learns a musical instrument by starting off with the hardest pieces even though they're beautiful; it's best to start with the basics! Chernev presents classic games by players such as Capablanca, Tarrasch, and Alekhine to repeatedly demonstrate the advantages gained by efficient development and strong positional play. Logical Chess: Move by Move, Irving Chernev (1900-1981), 1957 (games played 1889-1952, including one of Chernev's own), algebraic edition 1998, 256 pages, ISBN 0713484640, Dewey 794.

There are 33 great games from the past, and Chernev (as the title says) steps the reader through each move of each game, explaining the reasons for the move, and alternative moves. Now I realice that this comes not only by getting used to read the variations but also because of the better understanding of what's going on in the board. Plenty of diagrams, clear text (for a chess manual), and it's useful for players up to medium-strong club strength, and all the way down to pure beginners (though some of it may be over their heads at first.

This is no dry theoretical tome (it's a regular sized paperback) that makes you feel like you're back at university wishing you hadn't chosen this elective. A student in the chess club I started at school this year managed to win the right to represent our province at his grade level in next month's Canadian national chess tournament, so time to get some new training materials.

Of course you will find a lot of inaccuracies when using an engine, but this are instructive in the sense you can check what a very strong player missed in his analysis. e., king safety, inducing or avoiding the perpetually weakining of the pawn structure of the castled king). You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. If it is your first chess book, it is going to do a better job explaining basic moves than any other book. There is also a sufficient number of diagrams so that you won't get too lost as the game progresses. GAME 4, KING'S GAMBIT DECLINED, 1891, was one of eight games Blackburne played simultaneously, blindfolded!

There are also diagrams every few moves, showing the current postions of all the pieces, so you can not only get a better idea of where the pieces are, but can check you have made the right moves if you are playing these games on your own board. As good players know, one of the primary aspects to study is the endgame, and you'll have to find another book if you want to learn to win when most of the material is gone. When I believe that I have identified the critical turning points, the main positional ideas, and the key tactical alternatives, I read through Chernev's annotations. Even though he wrote many other good books (for example, every aspiring player should also own THE MOST INSTRUCTIVE GAMES OF CHESS EVER PLAYED), this is widely recognized as his best. One of the first books I owned, Chernev's THE FIRESIDE BOOK OF CHESS guided me through the many facets of chess during my formative years. It is your responsibility to make sure that your operating equipment is compatible with the relevant software or video DVD before purchasing and that software purchased is functionally adequate for your needs. The players you will encounter are Capablanca, Tarrasch, and Rubinstein rather than Karpov, Kasparov, and Kramnik. My goal in reading books like this is to incorporate into my subconscious as many master game patterns as possible: moves humans make, explanations humans give. I'm not sure why I read this book, but I bought it a few years ago for some reason (probably mentioned by some Youtuber) and so I finally finished reading it.

Overall, sure, it isn't a perfect book in some aspects, but as a tool to teach the basic principles of the game and how to play in general, what the plans are, it's a great book.

Considering that the books is written for Beginners it would have been helpful to at least outline the path or to choose a completely different game.
